Must Love Dogs Movie Story. After a divorcée (Diane Lane) gets a response to her personal ad from a dog lover (John Cusack), she fakes that she's one, too. Sarah Hurlihy, a divorced preschool teacher who has sworn off dating after her bad breakup, finds her family pushing her back into the dating world. Her sister places a personal ad for her, declaring that anyone answering it "must love dogs," despite the fact that Sarah doesn't own a dog herself. When someone intriguing responds to the ad, she decides to borrow Mother Theresa, her brother's dog, and plunge in. Must Love Dogs tells the story of Sarah Nolan (Diane Lane), a newly divorced woman cautiously rediscovering romance with the enthusiastic but often misguided help of her well-meaning family. As she braves a series of hilariously disastrous mismatches and first dates, Sarah begins to trust her own instincts again and learns that, no matter what, it’s never a good idea to give up on love.
